How reading time is calculated
The calculator divides the number of words by the selected words-per-minute pace, then converts that value to time. The number is useful for planning, but it is not a measurement of a particular person's comprehension or performance.
Reading speed
The default 238 WPM is a practical reference for adult English silent nonfiction from a reading-rate meta-analysis, not a universal human speed. Text difficulty, familiarity, language, reading purpose and accessibility needs can change the real pace.
Speaking time
Speaking uses a separate 150 WPM planning assumption. Change it for presentations, scripts, voiceovers or deliberate pauses. Silent reading and reading aloud are different jobs.
What the estimate leaves out
Images, code blocks, tables, pauses, emphasis, audience interaction and comprehension are not modeled. Treat the result as a schedule estimate rather than a stopwatch prediction.
Worked examples
1 min238 words at 238 WPM reading speed
5 min1,000 words at 200 WPM reading speed
10 min1,500 words at 150 WPM speaking speed
When this estimate helps
Use it to plan article read-time labels, study material, presentation scripts, narration, meeting remarks or any workflow where a word count needs a rough duration.
If you already know the word count, use direct word-count mode so you do not have to paste the text.
Common mistakes
- Using speaking WPM for silent reading, or the reverse.
- Assuming every tool counts words exactly the same way.
- Treating one reference WPM as an individual's measured speed.
- Ignoring pauses, visuals or discussion in a spoken presentation.
