TYPING SPEED TEST / MANUAL

Typing Speed Test Manual

Use Typing Speed Test to measure speed and accuracy against an English prompt, inspect the mistakes that affected the run, and start a short practice drill. The app runs in this browser page. It does not require an account and does not save a test history.

Start a test

Choose a duration and difficulty before you begin. Available durations are 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes. The default is 1 minute at Standard difficulty. Click or focus the typing passage, then type the first character. The timer starts on that first accepted printable character—not when the page opens and not when the passage receives focus.

Duration and difficulty lock after the run begins. New passage replaces the ready passage before a run. Practice opens a 60-second drill. Paste and drag-and-drop text insertion are blocked because the test is intended to measure actual typing.

Type and correct

Type the visible prompt in order. Correct characters are tracked separately from retained wrong characters. Backspace is allowed. When you remove a wrong retained character, the app records a corrected mistake. The wrong character attempt still remains part of raw WPM and accuracy, so correcting the prompt does not erase the earlier attempt.

Navigation keys and modifier shortcuts are not counted as printable attempts. The app does not provide a pause control. Its timer uses a monotonic browser clock and continues while focus is elsewhere; returning to the tab reconciles the display with the elapsed time.

Understand WPM

One standardized word equals five typed characters. Headline WPM measures final correctly matched prompt positions:

WPM = (final correctly matched characters ÷ 5) ÷ elapsed minutes

If a 60-second run ends with 300 correctly matched characters, the result is 60 WPM. The app rounds displayed WPM to a whole number.

Understand raw WPM and accuracy

Raw WPM counts every accepted printable character attempt, including wrong characters that you later remove:

Raw WPM = (all printable character attempts ÷ 5) ÷ elapsed minutes

Accuracy compares correct printable attempts with all printable attempts:

Accuracy = correct printable attempts ÷ all printable attempts × 100

Suppose a 60-second test ends with 300 final correct characters after 315 printable attempts. Raw speed is 63 WPM. If 300 of those 315 attempts were correct, accuracy is 95.2%. Accuracy is displayed to one decimal place.

Corrected and uncorrected mistakes

Uncorrected errors are wrong characters still retained in the final typed sequence. Corrected mistakes are wrong retained positions that you later removed with Backspace. A wrong attempt can therefore disappear from the final prompt while still affecting accuracy and raw WPM.

Consistency and pace

The app groups character attempts into five-second pace segments. Each segment is converted to raw WPM using the actual duration of that segment, including the final partial segment. Consistency is based on the coefficient of variation of those pace values:

Consistency = 100 × (1 − min(1, standard deviation ÷ mean pace))

A steadier pace produces a higher percentage. Fewer than two non-empty elapsed segments do not provide enough information, so consistency is shown as unavailable. This score is descriptive for this app; it is not a universal typing standard.

Weak keys and problem pairs

When a printable attempt is wrong, the app records the expected prompt character at that position. The most frequently missed expected characters appear as Weak keys. Problem pairs summarize nearby expected character pairs associated with misses. They are diagnostic hints from the current run, not a claim that a physical keyboard key is defective.

Practice weak keys generates a local 60-second drill that emphasizes letters from the current result. The drill is created in this page and is not saved after you leave or refresh.

Retake, new test, and practice

Retake repeats the same passage and settings so you can compare another attempt. New test returns to the last normal test duration and difficulty with a new passage. Practice weak keys turns the current diagnostic into a one-minute practice drill. The general Practice button starts a common-key drill without needing a completed result.

Copy a result

Copy result creates a short local text summary containing WPM, accuracy, raw WPM, consistency when available, and the Typing Speed Test URL. The app requests clipboard access only after you choose this action. If direct clipboard writing is unavailable, a read-only manual-copy field appears. No result is sent to Mycelgrid by the app.

Durations and difficulty

Short 30-second and 1-minute tests are useful for quick baselines. Longer tests put more weight on sustained control and reduce the effect of one unusually fast burst. Compare your own results using the same duration and difficulty when you want a cleaner personal trend. Easy, Standard, and Advanced change the prompt vocabulary and sentence complexity; they do not change the scoring formulas.

Limits and boundaries

Typing Speed Test uses an English prompt corpus generated locally from original passages. It does not diagnose keyboard hardware, verify identity, issue a certificate, or guarantee a professional skill level. Browser scheduling, device performance, input methods, and accessibility software can affect interaction timing. The app's timer uses the browser's monotonic clock rather than wall-clock time.

Privacy, memory, and navigation

Test state, mistakes, results, and generated practice text remain in page memory. There is no app-owned localStorage, sessionStorage, IndexedDB, cookie, account, database, analytics event, or remote result API. Refreshing, closing, or leaving the page can discard the current result. Mycelgrid's shared System/Light/Dark appearance preference is platform-owned and separate from typing-test data.
