TYPING PRACTICE / MANUAL
Typing Practice Manual
Typing Practice is a browser-local training app for repeatable typing drills. Choose a drill, duration, and accuracy target, type the prompt, then use the review to decide what to repeat next. The app does not require an account and does not save practice history.
Choose a drill
Common Words builds rhythm with frequently used words. Sentences adds capitalization and punctuation. Numbers & Punctuation adds numeric and symbol sequences. Focused Keys emphasizes one to five letters you choose. Custom Text uses text you provide locally.
Set the duration and accuracy goal
Available durations are 1, 3, 5, and 10 minutes. The default is 3 minutes. Accuracy goals are 90%, 95%, 98%, and 100%, with 95% as the default. Duration and setup controls lock once the round begins.
Start typing
Click or focus the practice passage and type the first printable character. The timer starts on that first accepted character. Paste and drag-and-drop insertion are blocked in the typing area. Backspace is allowed.
Understand the metrics
Headline WPM uses final correctly matched prompt positions, with five characters treated as one standardized word. Raw WPM counts all printable character attempts. Accuracy compares correct attempts with all printable attempts. A wrong attempt still affects accuracy after you remove it with Backspace.
Raw WPM = (all printable attempts ÷ 5) ÷ elapsed minutes
Accuracy = correct attempts ÷ all printable attempts × 100
Correct streaks
The Current streak increases for consecutive correct printable attempts. A wrong attempt or Backspace resets the current streak. Best correct streak keeps the highest uninterrupted run reached during the round.
Use the missed-key review
Letters and keys to revisit are the expected prompt characters most often associated with wrong attempts. Problem pairs show the nearby expected two-character sequence around a miss. These are practice cues, not evidence that a keyboard key is defective.
Repeat, regenerate, or focus
For generated drills, Repeat same drill uses the same prompt and settings, while New drill keeps the settings and generates a different local prompt. In Custom Text mode, the repeat action is labeled Restart custom text and reuses the text you supplied; there is no separate New drill action because the app does not alter your custom material. Practice missed letters converts alphabetic misses into a Focused Keys drill when at least one letter is available.
Custom Text
Custom Text requires at least 40 characters after whitespace is normalized. The source text is repeated locally as needed to provide enough material for the selected duration. The setup field can accept paste, but the typing area cannot. Custom text is not persisted or uploaded by the app.
Practice versus testing
Typing Practice is designed for training. Use the separate Typing Speed Test when you want a benchmark-style run. Keeping the two jobs separate helps a practice session stay focused on repetition and accuracy.
Privacy and limits
Practice state remains in page memory. There is no app-owned localStorage, sessionStorage, IndexedDB, cookie, account, database, analytics event, or remote scoring API. Built-in drills are English-language. Focused Keys accepts letters a–z. Browser timing and input methods can affect the interaction.
