Understanding text differences

Read a comparison with the right question in mind: what changed between these two versions?

A replacement is two operations

Original: The meeting is Tuesday.
Modified: The meeting is Thursday.

The original line is removed and the modified line is added. Word highlights identify Tuesday and Thursday. That is one change group, not a measure of how different the documents' meaning is. An unchanged following line stays outside that group.

Moved text can look removed and added

Imagine a list that changes from A, B, C to B, A, C. The comparison aligns a sequence of matching lines and represents the remaining movement through additions and removals. It does not certify that a block moved without being edited. Compare the two blocks separately when you need to check their wording.

Repeated entries can admit several equally short alignments. Two comparison programs may highlight different occurrences while both describe the supplied versions accurately. Keep the source versions and inspect the surrounding context.

Wrapping and newlines are different

A long paragraph wraps to fit a narrow screen without acquiring another newline in the text. A pasted paragraph with actual line breaks can have different line records. Comparison prepares CRLF and lone CR as LF, but keeps the presence of a final newline. A missing final newline has its own marker.

a\n and a contain the same visible letter but differ at the end. Blank lines also carry structure. Ignore extra spaces and tabs does not remove blank records.

A space can be a different character

An ordinary space is U+0020; a non-breaking space is U+00A0. They can look similar while behaving differently. Text Compare's extra-space option handles ordinary spaces and tabs only. It deliberately retains a non-breaking-space difference.

Ordinary separator: alpha beta
Non-breaking separator: alpha beta

If you want to clean formatting deliberately, open Text Cleaner in a new tab. Copy the source and result into this app to review that cleanup. Keep the original available; cleaning first can remove a difference you intended to investigate.

Visible characters can contain several code points

An accented letter can be represented as one code point or a letter plus a combining mark. Emoji can include skin-tone modifiers and joiners. Text Compare does not normalize those sequences into one canonical form, so similar-looking strings can differ. Word detail is token highlighting, not a promise that every highlighted piece is a whole human-perceived symbol.

Invisible marks and direction controls can be difficult to interpret visually. The app is a comparison aid, not a security sanitizer. Do not assume a lack of obvious colored characters proves the text is safe for a different system.

Ignore rules answer a narrower question

Exact mode asks which prepared line records differ. An ignore option asks which differ after that declared rule. Case-insensitive lowercasing is not a language-specific judgment or complete case folding. The spacing rule preserves word separators: alpha beta still differs from alphabeta.

Use the active-rule notice when reading the result or sharing a report. No differences with these options does not establish original-file byte identity.

A diff is not a similarity or plagiarism score

This app compares the two strings you supply. It does not search publications or the internet, infer the author, score originality, or evaluate legal significance. Review consequential edits in their context. To measure the length of a selected draft, open Word Counter in a new tab and paste it yourself.
