How the calculation works
Each clock value is converted to minutes after midnight. If End is later than Start, the gross span is End − Start. If End is earlier, the calculator adds 1,440 minutes to End first and marks the span as crossing midnight.
The optional break is then subtracted once from that gross span. The exact result remains an integer number of minutes.
Hours and minutes vs. decimal hours
8h 15m and 8.25 hours describe the same 495-minute result. Decimal hours divide total minutes by 60; they are not base-100 clock minutes. The calculator shows both so you can use the representation your task needs.
Example: a standard day
Start 08:30, End 17:15, Break 30 minutes. The gross span is 8h 45m. After the break, the result is 8h 15m, or 8.25 decimal hours.
Example: overnight
Start 22:00, End 06:00, Break 30 minutes. Because End is earlier than Start, End is treated as the next day. Gross time is 8h; the net result is 7h 30m, or 7.5 decimal hours. The result state reads Crosses midnight.
Why identical clock times are not guessed
09:00 → 09:00 could mean zero elapsed time or a full 24 hours. Without dates or an explicit day offset, the calculator cannot know which you intend, so it asks for different clock times instead of silently choosing.
Choose the right time app
This app measures one clock span. Use Time Calculator to add or subtract duration quantities. Use Time Card Calculator for a Monday–Sunday punch and lunch ledger. A future Time Duration Calculator can own date-and-time intervals.
What this calculator does not decide
It does not apply payroll rounding, overtime rules, break laws, wages, time zones, daylight-saving changes, or date arithmetic. If you need official payroll or legal treatment, verify the result against the policy or records that govern your situation.
