Project inputs

Enter actual dimensions. Start with a room, or add individual walls and known areas.

Rooms, walls and areas

Measured openings

Assign each opening to its wall or room. No prefilled door/window size is assumed.

Estimate assumptions

10% is an adjustable planning starting point, not a manufacturer guarantee. Pricing excludes labor, tax and delivery.

Review calculated sheet quantities and assumptions before purchase.

How to calculate drywall sheets

For a rectangular room, wall area is 2 × (length + width) × wall height. If the ceiling is included, add length × width. For individual walls, multiply wall length by height. Add all selected surfaces; optionally subtract only the actual measured openings assigned to those walls.

Apply the selected waste percentage to net coverage. Divide the resulting area by the nominal area of a sheet, then round up to whole sheets. A standard 4 × 8 ft sheet provides 32 ft² of nominal area, a 4 × 10 ft sheet provides 40 ft², and a 4 × 12 ft sheet provides 48 ft².

Worked example: 12 × 12 ft room

With 8 ft walls, four walls total 384 ft². Include the 144 ft² ceiling, and deduct a measured 3 × 7 ft door and 3 × 5 ft window (36 ft² total) to obtain 492 ft² net coverage. Adding a 10% waste allowance gives 541.2 ft². That is 17 sheets of 4 × 8 ft, 14 of 4 × 10 ft, or 12 of 4 × 12 ft by pooled area.

Openings and waste

Some estimates subtract large openings, while others retain openings as a reserve for cuts and offcuts. The opening switch makes the chosen method explicit. A waste allowance is separate and may need adjustment for room complexity, board orientation and handling losses.

Pooled sheets versus independent sections

The headline quantity is a pooled-area minimum: it assumes you can use coverage efficiently across all sections. The independent-section estimate rounds each area separately, which can be more conservative. Neither number calculates a cutting diagram, seam arrangement or installation plan. Check the real panel lengths, access limitations and applicable project requirements before ordering.

Other drywall supplies

Your project may also require joint tape, compound, appropriate fasteners, corner bead and tools. Quantities depend on the installation method, wallboard selection and site conditions. This calculator does not invent a screw, tape or compound formula; use product-specific installation guidance for those materials.

Limits and safety

Drywall thickness, panel type, fire resistance, moisture resistance, framing spacing, fasteners and ceiling requirements must be selected from the appropriate product and assembly guidance. A sheet area estimate does not certify structural or building-code compliance. Area measurements can double-count shared partitions when entered for multiple rooms; measure each finished face deliberately.

Questions

How many sheets do I need?

Measure the area, choose sheet size, decide whether to deduct measured openings, and set a waste allowance. The calculator rounds the pooled area up to whole sheets; a cutting layout may require more.

Should I deduct windows and doors?

You may deduct measured openings or keep them in the allowance for cuts. Choose one consistent method and document the assumption.

Can it calculate drywall mud or installation cost?

No. Joint compound and installation pricing depend on additional job-specific factors. You may enter your own price per sheet for a simple material-only subtotal.
