How to Switch Between Reading and Editing

Use Editing to make changes and Reading to review the Document with fewer controls.

4 minute readLast reviewed August 2026

Quick answer

Open a Document and choose Reading or Editing in the bottom dock. Editing shows writing controls. Reading gives the content more space for review.

Use each mode for a different job

Editing

Change the title or content, add blocks, use Undo and Redo, and save the Document.

Reading

Review the same Document without the block-creation and editing toolbar.

Switch modes

  1. Open a Document.
  2. Find Reading or Editing in the bottom dock.
  3. Choose the mode shown to switch.
  4. Check the mode label near the Document title when you need confirmation.

What changes in Editing mode

The editing toolbar appears with Add block, Undo, Redo, and More. On smaller screens, some choices open in a sheet above the bottom dock.

What changes in Reading mode

The editing toolbar is hidden so the Document is easier to review. Reading mode does not create a separate copy.

Reading and printing are different

Reading mode changes the on-screen view. Print / Save as PDF creates a print-oriented output. Review the browser print preview before saving or sharing it.
