Notepad user manual

Create and edit Notes, organize related work in Projects, and download copies you control. Your working data stays in this browser profile. There is no account or cross-device sync.

Create your first Note

  1. Choose New Note on Start, or use Paste as note in the Notes menu.
  2. Give it a title and write or paste its content.
  3. Edits are saved locally when browser storage is available. Check the save status. Choose Save note to add a saved version.
  4. Open Notes or Search to find it again. Use the Note menu to download a portable copy.

For example, create a Note called Weekend errands, add a checklist with “Buy groceries” and “Return library books,” and put it in a Project called Home. The Note remains an independently editable item.

Reading, writing, and blocks

Use Reading for a formatted view and Editing to change content. The block controls support paragraphs, headings, quotes, callouts, bulleted and numbered lists, checklists, code, dividers, tables, links, details, and page breaks. Advanced controls appear when they are useful in the editor.

Markdown is a portable representation, but extended details and page-break markup may render differently in other editors. Text export makes a plain-text copy; it does not preserve every visual style. Keep JSON or Markdown as well when structure matters.

Organize Notes into Projects

A Note contains your writing. A Project groups related Notes and can hold its own purpose and instructions. Create a Project, assign Notes through their properties or the Project work view, and move Notes between Projects. Notes without a Project appear as Unassigned work.

Deleting a Project removes the group and unassigns its Notes; it does not delete those Notes. Deleting a Note removes that Note and its saved version history from the current data. Review the deletion confirmation and download important work first.

Find your work

Search Note titles and content. The Notes library also provides Project and format filters and sort options. Clear the search or filters if a Note appears to be missing. Data saved on another browser, profile, or device is not available here.

Undo and saved version history

Undo and Redo support the current editing workflow. Saved version history is separate: Save note records a version. Each Note retains at most eight history entries, including its origin record. A version body longer than 180,000 characters may be recorded without a restorable body.

Restoring an eligible version creates a separate Note copy. It does not replace the current Note. History is browser-local, bounded, and included in the full backup where retained; it is not an indefinite archive.

Choose a download format

OutputUse it forBoundary
Markdown (.md)Portable writing and supported formatting.Other editors can interpret extended blocks differently.
Text (.txt)A simple readable text copy.Formatting is reduced.
JSON (.json)Structured title and content.Normal downloads avoid internal runtime data. User properties are optional.
Project Markdown / JSON / ZIPWork grouped under the selected Project.Export scope is the selected Project. Inspect files before sharing.
Full Notes backup ZIPA portable copy of all user Notes, Projects, properties, and retained history.Contains private work. Built-in guides and internal migration/archive state are excluded. Automatic restore is unavailable.
Print / Save as PDFA readable paper or PDF copy.Uses your browser’s print dialog, not a dedicated PDF converter.

Use More → Download Notes backup for the full ZIP. It includes separate Markdown Notes, Data/notes.json, Data/projects.json, property definitions, and a manifest. Open the ZIP locally and check important Notes. Keep backups somewhere you control.

Restore and Import are unavailable. A backup ZIP is useful for portability, but this version cannot restore it into Notepad automatically. An advanced internal JSON export may contain additional metadata; review it before sharing.

Browser saving and troubleshooting

Notepad saves your work in this browser on this device. Saving depends on browser permissions and available storage space. Private browsing, clearing site data, deleting a profile, or device loss can remove work. Download copies of important Notes.

If you see Not saved to this browser, keep the page open and copy or download your work. Do not assume a save succeeded. If saved data cannot be read, the app protects it from replacement and offers a download where possible. Do not clear site data as a first troubleshooting step.

Notes saved in another browser, browser profile, or device are separate. Your work does not sync between them automatically.

Appearance and privacy

Choose System, Light, or Dark to suit your reading preference. Your choice may be remembered on this device. Creating, editing, searching, and exporting work happens in your browser; Notepad does not upload your writing.

See the Notepad Privacy Policy for how your work is handled, or contact Mycelgrid without including private note content.
