Square Feet Conversion

Area conversions preserve the same two-dimensional area while changing the unit used to describe it.

Square inches to square feet

One foot is 12 inches, so one square foot is 12 × 12 = 144 square inches. Divide square inches by 144 to get square feet.

Square feet to square yards

One yard is 3 feet, so one square yard is 3 × 3 = 9 square feet. Divide square feet by 9 to get square yards.

Square feet to square meters

The international foot is exactly 0.3048 meter. Squaring that relationship gives 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m².

Square feet to acres

1 acre = 43,560 ft². Divide square feet by 43,560 to express the same area in acres.

Why feet do not convert directly to square feet

Feet measure one dimension. Square feet measure two dimensions. You need enough information to establish area—for example, length and width—before a square-foot result is meaningful.

Why cubic feet do not convert directly to square feet

Cubic feet measure volume. Converting volume to area requires another dimension such as depth or height. For concrete volume, use the related Concrete Calculator instead of dropping a dimension.
