Documents vs Responses vs Checkpoints vs Projects
Choose the type that matches the work you want to keep.
Quick answer
Use a Document for editable work, a Response for one saved assistant answer, a Checkpoint for an imported conversation package, and a Project to group related items.
How the four types differ
| Type | Best for | Editable? |
|---|---|---|
| Document | Writing, notes, drafts, and continued work | Yes |
| Response | One useful assistant answer kept as captured | Make a Document copy first |
| Checkpoint | A saved conversation package | Review it; copy selected work when needed |
| Project | Organizing related items | It organizes items rather than replacing them |
Use a Document when the work should change
Documents are for writing and revision. Add blocks, change the title, save updates, and use Download document when you need a local file.
Use a Response when the original answer matters
A Response keeps one assistant answer as captured. Choose Make copy when you want to revise it as a Document.
Use a Checkpoint for a saved conversation package
A Checkpoint keeps the imported package and its captured work together. Review it first, then copy or organize the parts you want to continue.
Use a Project to keep related work together
A Project groups Documents, Responses, and Checkpoints. It does not combine them into one record. Open the Project, find Download project, then choose Markdown, JSON, or ZIP.
A simple way to choose
- Need to edit it? Use a Document.
- Need to keep one answer as captured? Use a Response.
- Need to preserve a conversation package? Use a Checkpoint.
- Need to keep related items together? Use a Project.
