401K Calculator Guide · Target contribution
Estimate a 401K Contribution Rate for a Target
Target mode reuses the same projection model and solves only for the employee contribution rate.
Boundary checks
The calculator first projects at 0%. If the target is already reached, it returns 0%. It then projects at 100%. If that still falls short, the app reports the target as unreachable within the modeled range rather than inventing a contribution rate.
Search and display rounding
For a reachable target between those boundaries, the app searches for the minimum modeled rate that reaches the target. The displayed rate is rounded upward to the nearest 0.1 percentage point.
The displayed rate is re-run
After rounding, the calculator re-runs the projection at that exact displayed rate. The projected balance shown beside a 4.4% solved rate therefore belongs to the 4.4% scenario, not to a hidden higher-precision rate.
Worked example
Using the built-in 30-year scenario and a $1,000,000 target, the frozen model solves to a displayed employee contribution rate of 4.4%. Re-running the model at 4.4% produces a balance of about $1.013 million.
Not a contribution recommendation
The solved rate is the mathematical result of the assumptions entered. It does not apply current IRS limits, taxes, personal cash-flow needs, risk tolerance, or plan-specific restrictions.
