Use Chat Checkpoint on the conversation page you want to preserve. Keep that ChatGPT tab open until the extension reports that capture and verification are finished.
Open the conversation
Go to the supported ChatGPT conversation. Select the Chat Checkpoint extension action to open its Chrome side panel.
Choose Capture Chat once
The extension moves through the conversation, collects available text, and checks for late-loading assistant Responses.
Review and download
Check the user-message and assistant-Response counts, review the status, and download the local files or complete ZIP you need.

Chat Checkpoint creates portable records from conversation content available on the active page. It is not an account backup or an attachment downloader.
Files, images, and interactive artifacts are not included.
Included
User messages, assistant Responses, code shown as conversation text, capture metadata, verification status, and the local formats offered by the installed version.
Not included
Uploaded files, generated downloadable files, images, deleted chats, hidden provider data, account history, interactive canvases, or artifacts that must be saved separately.
Completeness
Completeness depends on what ChatGPT makes available from the active conversation page. Review the result counts and status before treating an export as complete.
Start with the simplest checks.
ChatGPT pages change over time, and very long conversations can be demanding on the browser. These steps preserve your existing conversation while resolving the most common problems.
The side panel says it cannot find a conversation
- Confirm the selected browser tab is an open conversation on
chatgpt.com. - Wait for the conversation page to finish loading.
- Reload that ChatGPT tab, reopen Chat Checkpoint, and try again.
Capture is taking a long time
Long chats may require repeated scrolling and late-content verification. Keep the active ChatGPT tab open and avoid starting the same capture repeatedly. A slower capture is not automatically a failed capture.
The page or browser is lagging
Close unrelated heavy tabs, allow the current capture to finish or cancel it, and retry after the ChatGPT page becomes responsive. Browser performance, conversation size, and device memory can all affect runtime.
The panel shows another capture
The current Free candidate uses one retained capture controller per Chrome profile. Finish, download, or discard that capture before beginning another capture in the same profile.
A download did not appear
Check Chrome’s Downloads list and the device’s Downloads folder. Confirm Chrome is allowed to download files, then choose the download action once more if no file was created.
Capture stopped or was interrupted
If Resume Capture is available, use it to continue from the retained progress. If the page changed substantially or the retained state is no longer useful, download any current capture evidence you need, discard it, and start again.
Review Needed is a safety signal.
It does not automatically mean everything failed.
Review Needed means the extension detected uncertainty—such as a sequence gap, unresolved content, interruption, or page state that prevented a clean completeness result.
- Compare the first and last captured turns with the conversation.
- Check user-message and assistant-Response counts.
- Keep the diagnostic record only when it helps troubleshooting.
- Retry from a stable, fully loaded conversation page when necessary.

The extension is designed to preserve useful conversation work while keeping the user in control of every download and handoff.
Does Chat Checkpoint upload my conversation?
No. The current Free candidate processes the conversation in Chrome and does not upload captured conversation data to Mycelgrid. Downloads occur only when you choose a download action.
Does it capture files or images from the conversation?
No. It includes conversation text and code. Files, images, generated downloads, and interactive artifacts are not included and may need to be saved separately.
Can I continue the work in another chat or AI system?
You can download portable conversation, Checkpoint, and continuation files offered by your installed version, review them, and choose what to provide to a new chat, workspace, or compatible AI system. Nothing is sent automatically.
Is there a maximum number of turns?
The product does not publish an arbitrary turn guarantee. Capture depends on the content available from the active page and the browser/device resources available at runtime. Review the verification result for each capture.
Will capture continue if I close the laptop?
Do not rely on closed-laptop or sleep behavior. A computer that is truly asleep normally pauses browser activity. Keep the browser and conversation available until the extension reports completion.
Can I run multiple captures at once?
The current Free candidate uses one retained capture controller per Chrome profile. Concurrent capture is not a supported product claim.
Where does retained capture progress live?
Capture progress and the latest result are kept in Chrome extension storage on the device until they are replaced, discarded, cleared with browser data, or removed with the extension.
Is Mycelgrid affiliated with OpenAI?
No. Mycelgrid Chat Checkpoint is an independent tool. ChatGPT is a trademark of OpenAI, and Mycelgrid is not affiliated with or endorsed by OpenAI.

When reporting a problem, share the smallest amount of information needed to reproduce it. Do not send the conversation or downloaded capture unless Mycelgrid specifically requests it and you have reviewed it for sensitive content.
